I believe that, in mythology, there are no good creatures. Usually one god or something turns out to be pretty good, the major exception to the rest, but then gets killed. (Adonis might be a good example in Greek mythology.) As far as creatures go, they are all bad or evil without exception.
I noticed this right off as they were teaching this junk to children (me included), and I wondered if they should be doing that since they were all evil characters. I think that someone else noticed that too, because eventually the evil characters get good things attached to them. Apollo is a good example, he was supposed to be extremely evil, a very demonic, satanic like figure, but who wants to worship that? So he becomes a god of light, healing, music, poetry, prophecy, and manly beauty.
The same thing occures with some of the creatures in mythology. Anything good about them is imposed later. Nearly all of them (or perhaps all of them) are said to have been monsters.

Argus Panoptes: the all seeing, early mythology says he had four eyes, later on it was said he has 100!
Cerberus: The three headed dog that guards the entrance to the underworld.
Cyclopes: There are 3 of them born to Gaea and Uranus, they are Brontes, Steropes, and Arges. (and yes they are good, they helped Zeus defeat the Titans.
Hecatoncheires: "hundred handed" they had fifty heads and were huge!
Pegasus: the winged horse that carries Zeus' lightning bolts.
These are the "good" creatures I know of, But there are many more interesting creatures that weren't so "good", Hope that helps. If you need more you can always go to the mythology section of a book store they usually carry pretty good references on this stuff. :)
