It is possible to not be good at drawing but good at painting
They could use thier colours well. They most like are not big on detail and a painting dosn't need lot of detail to be a good painting
There are heaps of styles.

Yeah definitely!!! I'm really bad at drawing but when I paint i find it comes naturally. I'm sure there are people who are also good drawers but bad painters.

Yes, its possible.. for me its the reverse.. Im good at drawing but I suck at painting.

sorry to burst your bubblye but they shouldnt be, if they cant handle the basics; then i suggest they dont start painting. for example many people says that "my three year old can paint the same thing matisse could" but they havent seen his studies, all realistic.
