I am being made redundant next week and am very keen to get a new job straight away, I have applied for some and put my CV out there but if I have nothing soon I will need to sign on. I have heard different things about how you claim so I just wondered if anyone had done it recently and knew the actual procedure?? Thanks!

best bet is to call this number: 08456004258 and they will talk you through the application. They will call you back and organise someone to call you back and arrange a time to fit you in.

All JSA applications have to be made by phone. The number should be in the local phone book, or you can get it from your local jobcentre (irony eh go there to get the no to phone them on!)
They will take your details on the phone and phone you back within a couple of days to check these.
You then will have an interview at your local jobcentre and be given a day to sign on every two weeks.
Depending on your circumstances you may also be able to claim housing benefit and council tax benefit. There is usually a form in your jobseekers pack for this, but dont use this, go to the local council and get the full forms cos the jobcentre dont always pass them on and they dont have sufficient info on them to make a claim.
Make sure you go to every meeting they arrange and do what they say cos otherwise they can stop your money.
Gotta watch lost now, hope this helps.

Hi

In some areas you have to make an appointment to make a fresh claim. I would suggest you ring the job centre tomorrow and explain your situation. It may take afew weeks for any money to come in so try and budget for that. If you get any redundancy money try not to blow it as it may come in useful in the future. You can always try the job centre for employment, you can access it online and in the job centre itself. I have found a number of decent jobs this way and I was fortunate not to be unemployed at the time.

Good luck with your job hunting.

Dean

If you go to the jobcentre they will NOT start your claim, you need to phone jobseekers direct and tell them you want to apply for jobseekers allowance and they will take your details and book you an appointment in your local jobcentre. If you do go to the jobcentre they will just give you the number and send you on your way

Contact the JobCentre the very first day you are without work. If you delay it you will lose the money for the days you waited.

They will make an appointment for you to attend. They will send out forms for you to fill in, that they go over with you when you attend the appointment.

You are not paid for the first 3 days I believe.

ring up for an appointment asap, thats the day you can get paid from, there are 3 waiting days, and also pay in lieu of notice and any holiday, and redundancy pay will be taken into account before they pay you, but in order to get contibutions for the days you are unemployed(this will affect your pension), u must make a claim as soon as possible x

go to the local jobcenter and use on of their phones to talk to someone.
depending on the area you live in you will have an appointment within 2-6 weeks.

and try your best to get a job as the longer you sign on the more grief they give you.
