The US still manufactures a lot of things but super low cost items are best made overseas. If it were not because of these low cost suppliers, you'd be paying 2x or 3x more than you are now. Many people listen to union talks because these unions live off the adverse relationships between labor and management and they are losing membership. Certain states are losing manufacturing jobs for sure and politicians want to score points wtih these voters. And high end items can be made with new technologies that don't involve much labor. That is a trend.

Because we have a free market and a system of capitalism. Corporations are free to manufacture how and where they please. This is not something that can be changed by Congress and the government can not regulate this. The only way to change the trend of offshore manufacturing is for the consumers to refuse to purchase items not made in the USA. Until then, the companies will continue to seek the cheapest labor costs to maximize their profits to keep the investors happy.

Because, uh, the latest statistics on manufacturing indicate that with only 5% of the worlds population the U.S. manufacturers 20% of the manufactured goods in the world. How much more do you want us to do. I worked 65 hrs last week.
