Rats are omnivores and as such they eat both meat and vegetable matter. Rats are not only prey to the larger pets in the home, but they are also predators of our smaller pets. Rats have been known to kill and consume mice, hamsters, gerbils, small birds, and insects.
The predatory instinct of rats:

It would be very wise to make sure that your rats and your hamsters **never** meet as the outcome would be bad for your hamsters.
The second reason for not housing your hamsters and rats together is that they are different species of rodents that live totally different lifestyles both in the wild and as domestic pets. You could not possibly meet the needs of both animals by having them live in the same cage. One of these most important needs is territory and both of these animals are very territorial. They won't tolerate living in the same space.
Enjoy your critters seperately :)

I do not recommend placing these species in a cage together. They are both quite territorial species, and you will almost certainly deal with fighting, and the aftereffects thereof.
In addition, they would probably spread disease to one another.
Just not a good idea. But I'm glad you asked. :)
