A few of my professors would invite students out for drinks or to their homes. It was always a small group of students and the talk was appropriate - about school work, finding jobs after graduation, etc. However, as students, we had a professional relationships with these professors over the course of a few years.
An end of semester get together would seem not only appropriate but a very nice gesture on your part.

Your friend is afraid of being accused of having sex with the students - which he would prolly do. I suppose I would. But these are adults, and in no way would such an accusation be actionable. Most school administrators are so concerned about budgets, new rules, dealing with other educators, liscensure, etc...they really don';t care about teachers having sex with students, using drugs and alcohol with students... When I was in college, students and professors getting **together** was no big deal at all. after all, these are all adults. who cares? It would be fun to party with your students as most of them would warm up to you and consent to anything because partying with a teacher makes them feel important. hell, go for it!

No. Kids have a built in fantasy of conquering their teacher and if you are the most available and around them a lot if is probably going to happen and all it takes is one lie to lose you your job and much more.
I watched a documentary of this subject in England and all of the girls said they saw it as a challenge to be the one girl the teacher would choose to be with. They made themselves very available and things happened every time.
A normal adult should not want to hang out with kids. It is something you may need to get therapy about.

You'll have to check with your school specifically. Most schools I've taught at have very strict anti-fraternization policies - It's a protection for both the students, and the teachers.

I have heard of college professors having their students over for dinner. I believe they served some alcohol too. But nothing too crazy.

talk with the schoolboard to find out all the facts and/or procedures to follow. it may take some time and paperwork. perhaps you could set aside a classperiod in the school's classroom and have a small celebration.
