I just came back from a cruise to Belize. It is real jungle and a hard way to live. The Spanish did not settle here because:

1. No good for Agruculture. With dense jungle, there is not the proper place to grow crops like corn, bean, and other necessary crops for the Spanish diet. There people would have starved there.

2. Slavery was rampant. You had Central Americans, Mexicans and blacks living here. The blacks were slaves at the time and lived a poor existance. The fighting amounst these groups left no room for the Spansih.

3. Poor Country. The Spanish did not wish to take over a country full of povery and strife. The country was so poor because of the agriculture was not present. It is a hard life in a country that has jungle, water, and not easy access for products coming in. The Spanish liked wealth.

4. Topograph and Weather. This country has jungles that you can chop and make a clearing and then the growth overtakes the clearing within a year. It is hard to build homes and buildings when the jungles just over-takes them. And the weather is miseralble. Lots of rain, intense summer sun, much humidity. Very hot in summer almost unbearable, as close to equator.
Lots of bugs.

5. Location. The country of Belize or (British Honduras) is tough to get to. You can not easily get to it from the inland areas and countries. That is almost imposible back then. So the only way in and out is the ocean. But to get there you must pass the waters off Meixco. The Mexicans watch their shores and therefore that would result in war or catastrophy. Coming from the South you must pass South American and Central America. This was not easy either. And crossing East to West you had to cross the Gulf with its storms and no areas to anchor your ship. Belize was cut off from the world in those days.

I modern times, Belize makes money off growing Cashews and tourism. And they are still a poor poor country.

Good Luck
