Corono del Mar is nice. There are also a lot of little coves in Laguna Beach, but you have to park and walk around to find them.
You would look a little ridiculous trying to swim at Balboa Island though, since there are docks all around the island right in front of people's houses.

Try Balboa Island...no waves. Also, right next to the main beach at Corona del Mar there is a cove( to the right of main beach) we used to call it Chinaman's Cove. If it is not a private beach now it is a great place to go.
