Returned them to suppliers for a refund I'm sure.

EDIT: I'm thinking the naivete is coming the other direction Venice Girl. Wal-Mart has a contract with each regional supplier to remove and reimburse for ANY fish alive or dead at the request of Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is a massive company with huge financial resources, what it wants it gets, pure and simple. The suppliers are even obliged to refund and remove dead fish the customers have returned. For the company (that makes such decisions it isn't about the fish, it's purely about the profit margin. Do you think they are going to toss away a few hundred bucks when they could so easily recover the money? Nope, not a chance, that's how they do business. How do I know? While I was in school I worked for one of the regional suppliers and treated returned Wal-mart fish to get them in good enough shape for sale to regular pet stores. So yes, I do honestly believe they can and will take them back, I saw it everyday for over a year. Best hands on disease diagnosis and treatment experience I ever had. Yep, same supplier the little mom & pop places use...except Wal-Mart got everything and exactly 40% off of the price to ANY other store in the area. Again, in the contract. Don't kid yourself, they don't flush money down the drain. Again that's why they never properly treat the fish, cheaper to return them and get more than hire people that know what to do an pay for medications. It's simple Econ 101.

I am not sure why they would get rid of fish. Maybe you should go to those stores and ask some of the people that work there. I did that before and it worked out perfect. (except I had a different question) Sorry but I don't really know the answer to this! Good Luck finding out the answer!!!!!

My local Wal-Mart still has them and the tanks are horrendous! Periodically I send an e-mail to corporation about it. Within 1 business day I get a sassy call from the pet department manager saying the tanks are in good shape. If I check that day, there is usually improvement, but it doesn't last.
If you want to help the fish, you gotta complain to corporate. This gets the tanks services. Many tanks are bare locally. One store about 30 miles gave up. Others should follow the example.

After reading this yesterday I went to go check on the one near me which usually has more dead fish in the tanks then alive fish. Well I was surprised since it looks like someone has cleaned them up and I didn't see one dead fish, I'm sure there were diseased ones though but before I got to have a closer look I saw the bettas. There were around 12 of them and at least 5 were dead, and not recently dead because the water was cloudy and slightly brown. Out of the rest around half looked on their way out and they all had an inch or less of water in their tiny cup so I went and grabbed a bottle of water conditioner and my mom gave them fresh water while I made sure no one was coming, not like they would of done something anyway. We would of cleaned out their cups but was afraid of shocking them too much.

I was thinking about setting up an all girls tank and the healthiest betta just happened to be a female, a crowntail none the less. So I placed her in the cart and accidentally covered it with something and forgot to pay for it, oops *hehe*. She seems very happy in her 2.5 gallon quarantine tank until I set up something bigger for her, I may even put her in with the guppies once I know she will make it.

Magic, your naivete (or optimism) is so cute. :) First, given Wal-Mart's history with fish abuse and rampant sickness, do you really believe that any supplier would take back the fish? They have no proof that the fish are healthy and no one is going to take back a sick fish. It would be a nice scenario to believe and maybe I'm just intensely cynical, which, I will be the first to admit, I can be, but I see these poor fish going right down the drain with the water.

I work for Wal-Mart(not in pets!) and recently re-did the pet department, minus the fish tanks. We got rid of ours because it wasn't making money AND employees were not keeping up with the tanks.

I actually work in toys and have talked people out of buying fish at our store. Most of the fish delivered already had ick on them. So I think it was a good thing they decided to get rid of them.

Magicman probably has the right answer as usual, since he did work for them. (for, or close enough. lol)

I haven't checked our wally-mall yet. I planned to get fish this past weekend, and I'm not one to get fish from wallymall. I'm glad I decided to get them at the pet store instead of there now! lol

Nunya Biznis I'd give you 10 thumbs up if I could! I applaud you for taking care of those fish, and rescuing the girl!!!!! Sneaking her out or not, she - or the other bettas - don't deserve to have to suffer like that!!!! Good luck with the "girl's only party" you got going on!!!

;o)

Whoops I was wrong. Walmart is stopping the sale of fish in some of its stores in response to consumer demand.

Spectrum, which sells Tetra and Jungle brand aquariums and related products, said the decision affected 700 stores.

As far as abuse, visit http://www.petstoreabuse.com for information on how you can stop pet store (and WALMART) abuse. Don't just ignore it!

At the Wal-mart I was at last week, they were discounting them and selling them until they were all gone. I know this because I bought the very last betta they had, which was also the very last fish they had period.

God, they were awful with the fish. Maybe they got smart & let the proper aquarium store sell them.
