It's used for a newborn baby, up to 3 months. It's "cozier" as its a smaller space, and convenient because it fits right next to your bed for easy access during all those night feedings. (And "finger checks" under the nose to make sure they're still breathing!) :-)

I've started all three of my kids in a bassinet first. They liked the feeling of being a little more enclosed as opposed to sleeping in a large open crib. Around the third or fourth month my kids grew too big to stay in the bassinet, so I moved them to a crib. You can always roll up a couple of blankets and put them on either side of your baby to take up some of the room if they seem to not like it. That helped a couple of my kids.

It makes it easy to have the baby in the room with you where ever you are. I have been told it also helps the baby feel more secure because they are surrounded on all sides. My baby sleeps in her bassinet right next to my bed. I don't have to get out of bed to take care of her. Babies do out grow the bassinet really quickly. They are generally used for 0-3 months.

We have an antique bassinet that we kept in our room. The basket detached from the legs so I could move it around the house while I was cleaning.

it is used for young babies and the bassinet has a cover or hood on it. its usually on wheels so it can be rolled from place to place in the house allowing baby and mother to constantly be in the same room. it is not like a cradle which allows for side to side swinging of the bed.

It was nice to have in the first weeks when the baby slept all the time. I could lay her in that and move her with me to whatever room I was in (mine was on wheels). But she was too wiggly for it by 1 month and had to be moved to a crib at night and her pack n play during the day.
I had a great pack n play though......it had the "shelf" thing so that the mattress was up near the top. It was nice to have the baby up like that so I could see her. then when she got bigger, I took out the "shelf" and put the mattress in the bottom and it is a regular pack and play now.
