A Sedimentary rock is one of the three main rock groups (along with igneous and metamorphic rocks) and is formed in four main ways:

by the deposition of the weathered remains of other rocks (known as 'clastic' sedimentary rocks);
by the accumulation and the consolidation of sediments;
by the deposition of the results of biogenic activity; and
by precipitation from solution.

Sedimentary rocks include common types such as chalk, limestone, sandstone and shale. Sedimentary rocks cover 75% of the Earth's land area. Four basic processes are involved in the formation of a clastic sedimentary rock: weathering (erosion)caused mainly by friction of waves, transportation where the sediment is carried along by a current, deposition and compaction where the sediment is squashed together to form a rock of this kind.

Sedimentary rocks are classified into three groups. These groups are clastic, biogenic, and precipitate.

Metamorphic rock known as Breccia is good example of sedimentary rock

Shale.
Shale is a fine-grained sedimentary rock whose original constituents were clays or muds. It is characterized by thin laminae breaking with an irregular curving fracture, often splintery and usually parallel to the often-indistinguishable bedding plane. This property is called fissility. Non-fissile rocks of similar composition but made of particles smaller than 1/16 mm are described as mudstones. Rocks with similar particle sizes but with less clay and therefore grittier are siltstones.

Shale is the most common sedimentary rock.

Earth formed 4.5 billion years ago and a theory propounded called "nebular Theory" to understand origin of earth as well as our solar system as well. According to one of the views , heavier elements like nickel etc., tend to settle in centre of nebula due to rotation and lighter elements like silica tend to occupy outer layers and these layers due to change in concentration separate themselves and aligned as planets.
When earth formed There was only one sea called "Sea of thethys" and land are bifurcated into two due flow this sea and those called "Laurasia" and "Gondwana land"

Earth has witnessed gargantuan "Volcanism" in its dawn and gradually sea has carried debris of rock in its course and deposited them under the sea. Due to friction and other environmental factors these debris turned into fine granules. The most ccommonly known example is "SANDSTONE" . Any rock formed due to sedimentation
of water bodies are called " Sedimentary Rock and it is one of its kinds that are avilable on this earth's crust , called igneous rocks, formed due to volcanism and Metamorphic rocks which metamorphosed due to denudation and weathering of rocks. And therefore, A sedimentary rock was originally a igneous rock and after sedimentation by waterbodies it beomes a Sedimentary rock , The Common chemical composition available in these rocks are SiO2(Silicaon dioxide) , CaCO3 (Calcium Carbonate) etc.,

sandstone, limestone, conglomerate.... all are formed from sediments. The other two types of rocks are igneous (volcanic) and metamorphic ( a rock that has been altered by heat and pressure)
