There are three ways to become an officer in the military:

1) Attend a service academy. These essentially are 4 year colleges and upon graduation you are an officer.

2) ROTC on a college campus. You are a regular student except that you take ROTC courses. I'm sure it depends on the program, but as an example, I was in AFROTC and we had weekly drill and a weekly class. After 2 years, you had to go to a 2-4 week camp at an AF base for training as well. Once you have met all your physical and academic criteria, once you graduate, you are an officer.

3) OCS (Officer Candidate School) or at least that's what the Navy calls it. Other branches have similar schools, but different names. You can do this after getting a college degree without having gone through ROTC or an academy.

If you go to a federal service Academy (they are all highly selective), you will get a world class education and training in becoming an officer. The Military Academy (West Point), U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) and the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) are very challenging academically and will help you the best of all officers when you graduate. They admit about 15% of all applicants and the rigorous Academics yield a Bachelor of Science Degree in whatever you decide to major (even if it's a humanities major). The education you'll receive rivals that of the Ivy League Universities plus professional training. If you have what it takes, you should apply to one of these institutions, they carry a lot of weight when you graduate.

Graduating from a 4 year college is one step. You also have to be a US citizen (or naturalized), pass the ASVAB, and pass medical, physical and security background checks. There is also an age limit. Visit a recruiter for the branch you're interested in and they will answer all of your questions.
