No, FedEX is a corporation. The three major private carriers are FedEx, UPS, and DHL and none of them are owned by the US government.
The US Postal Service (USPS) is owned and operated by the government.

Of course it is private. That is why it sucks so much. Give me the USPS any day of the week. I've had too many issues with Fed EX to count. However, what can you expect from private sector except over pricing, piss poor service, and incompetence.

when Fred Smith started Fedex express he was hoping to
get the contact for the Federal reseve banks (where they used
to send checks to other banks overnight) so he called
it Federal express.. of course that he didnt get that contract
but he keep the name -only now shorten to fedex..
