Well actually, I can make it sputter when I rev the motor and release also. It is not related to the clutch really.

Could be a vacuum leak.

I have been a shade tree mechanic for over 40 years. I simply can't tie depressing the clutch to an engine problem, like you are discussing, no matter how hard I try. Some years back an interlock switch was put on the clutch and brake for starting but that doesn't sound like a realistic diagnosis. I just don't know what to tell you other than simply attack it as an engine problem. Check all the hoses under the hood. Look for splits and cracks. Any leakage of pressure or vacuum can give some weird indications. If the car has original plugs and wires that is an option and don't forget the fuel, air and other filters. You could always take it in and have a computer diagnostic run on it.

OK, there's my 2 cents worth. I hope it helps and good luck with the beast...

Sounds like it's a Hunk O' Junk and you should consider getting something reliable, rather than keep a vehicle that you hope to fix up one day.

Fuel system could be dirty. Timing could be off. Could use a good tune up, maybe??
