I have been using the internet to search for this book, but unfortunately I remember so little about it that I am stumped.

This book was written about a black girl who lived with her mother. I think they were former slaves, and they worked for a white family. Anyway, when she was small the girl didn't know she was black, and I remember a scene where she got in a group photograph with the white children, and when they got the picture back she asked "who is that little black girl?" or something to that effect.

The only other part I remember is there is a flood and her boyfriend/husband (I think?) saves her from being killed but in the process he gets bit by a dog. He gets rabies and eventually dies. I remember a part where she's trying to give him water and he keeps saying it's poisoned, because of his rabies.

~Thanks in advance!

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. It has all of the scenes you describe. Her name is Janie and her 3rd husband Teacake saves her from the flood and is bitten by a rabid dog. he later dies of Rabies.
