Its actually a representative Republic, with a much stronger federal government than was actually planned by the founding fathers. The Civil War changed that

A representative democracy; meaning we cast votes to choose people to tell us how to run our lives. It's not really freedom, too many people who can't handle the idea that we might make choices that are different than they way they think we should choose are in government making laws to take away our choices.

I consider it representative democracy, but I agree, it's not true democracy. There has never been one.
Maybe it is a Constitution-based federal republic and/or a strong democratic tradition

Its technically a "Republic"- that is, the people vote for what they believe is right.
However, its technically a socialist country since Welfaire, Social Security, and the government DEMANDS that they put their nose in everyones business.
