Can a Chinese Algae Eater get neon tetra disease?

Not really sure if your algae eater can get it. It has been identified in a range of fish but almost all of them are tetras and carps or carplike fish (such as rasboras) It is NOT contagious and will NOT spread to other fish in the tank just because you have an infected fish. Total misconception. The disease is ONLY spread when a fish eats infected material like the dead body of an infected fish or infected live foods, Tubifex worms are often a carried of this but only when live. Freezing or freeze drying kills the sporozoan responsible for the disease. It is extremely rare in most live foods and does not occur in such foods as bloodworms, daphnia, mosquito larvae and the like. Only foods grown in waste water runoff from infected fish ponds are suspect.

The only prevention of neon tetra disease is to not introduce it to the tank in the first place. Use a quarentine tank for new purchases and watch them for a week or so and don't feed live tubifex.

Given all of this, I would recommend you remove the infected fish asap as algae eaters are notorious for eating dead fish in a tank and would certainly catch it when the other fish dies if they can carry it.

Yes. The disease was first discovered and described in Neon Tetras, which is why it got that name, but it can affect many other species of fish. There is no known cure for this disease, but it is contagious, so if your "algae eater" has it, it needs to be moved to a quarantine/hospital tank. You can try to let it live and see if it somehow recovers or you can properly euthanize the fish, which is not by flushing. The best prevention is to maintain high water quality. Please note, however, that there is a bacterial disease called "false neon disease" which can be treated as with any bacterial infection. You may wish to try Maracyn before euthanization in the event it is false neon disease. Good luck!

Other fish can suffer from the same diseases as a Neon Tetra so put the Neon in quarantine - like in a hospital tank. It is a good idea to always separate healthy fish from sick ones as soon as possible.
