John Ritter, the actor, died on the set of 8 Simple Rules. He had, I believe a heart attack.
I don't know how they wrote him out of the story, I don't watch the show.

John Ritter died in real life, seemingly due to a heart condition he was not aware that he had. I think they wrote it into the show that he was killed in a car crash on the way home one night. The show took a break and returned with an episode entitled "Goodbye". I think I actually saw it on TV yesterday. The other members of the family were going through boxes of stuff, reflecting on the past.

He was taken to a hospital, but died of an aortic dissection.
