Per the USGS, the lower mantle is denser. Which makes sense. Less dense stuff floats on top of denser stuff.

No, the weight of the upper mantle forces phase changes in the mineralogy of the lower mantle. The resultant minerals are denser due to closer packing of atoms. Two examples to research for you project: olivine assumes the spinel structure and (I think) pyroxene assumes the perskovite structure.

the lower mantle acts as a dense plastic (more solid than a plastic) whilst the upper mantle is more fluid but still plastic in form. in esscence the upper mantle is less dense
Earth quakes have proved this by the refraction and change in speed as the shock waves (p and s waves) pass over the boundary
