In answer to your question - no. He did not stay close to the values that our fore fathers intended for this nation. There are obvious "good" consequences that came from TR's efforts.
Today we can look back on the motives of the period and critique them - I am free to say No to your question BUT - Had I lived in TR's day, I would have agreed fully with his motives and actions.
There is no "short" intro to his life. You would have to include all aspects - Progressive Muckraking reformer, politician, conservationist, writer, Jingo, Rough Rider, social commentator...
Effect- immeasurable - Overseas expansion, equality, gov't regulation, and more.

Theodore Roosevelt most famous quote was "Speak softly, and carry a big stick!" I think Abraham Lincoln was my favorite president, because he freed the slaves. You can look Theodore up on the internet and write your own paper. Lots of luck, God Bless, Martha S.

One of my fave speeches of Teddy's.
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
