On the other hand, many people find that the consequence of success is living happily ever after. One person's idea of success (money, fame, all the plastic surgery anyone could ask for) might be very different from someone who finds success in, say, a feeling of peace in their life or pride in their abilities...it's all, as they say, relative. Hopefully, the consequences of any success would include joy.

...Pride comes to mind. The feeling/thought "that I accomplished this all by myself without anyones help." "I got mine so I am certainly am not going to help you!(Get to the top) These people can become arrogant, self seeking because they have reached some iota of importance. You see it with movie stars. After the long had climb to sucess, some become alcoholics, drug addicts. As they have "reached the top" what else is left? This is what they strove for. Now what? Its like a wedding. The bride takes time and preparation for the "wedding" but gives no thought to the "marriage." Now the wedding is just a short part of the beginning of the marriage but most people just think that it will somehow work itself out. The majority do not take classes to understand that it will be like dealing with a spouse. Classes in cooking, relationships, how to bargain (where both come out winners and not just you), finance, child psychology are all preparatory to what is to come up in the marriage but more people leave it to chance. So when a problem comes up, they are left bewilderert because the "fairy tale" had the couple "living happily everafter." The rest of the story could be that the invading forces over took the castle and killed the prince and princess, so they had a short life but who knows.
The great Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, suffered from the sin of pride (he thought he was so great he must be a "god" and lost his kingdom for it. He lost his mind and for 7 years, wandered in the forest like an animal, until he realized there is only one God. His story is given to us so that we might learn that we must guard ourselfs from it.
Think of it this way, if you had people watching you, trying to get your photo and telling how wonderful they think you were in whatever movie, play they saw you in; day in day out. Slowly what they say might begin to take root. You begin to get a big head. So when like Nick Nolte or Paris Hilton you get arrested for a DUI you are shocked, amazed. Me! but I am so and so. You can't know who I am otherwise this won't be happening to me!
Pride cometh before a fall. That's why God says guard your hearts that you do not become prideful. For you can lose it all that you have worked so hard to gain.

Success can easily lead to bragging and pride. In many religions, it is a disease of the heart (pride) and this disease can originate from any overacting and self-consciousness due to extreme wealth, talent or otherwise, success. Also, success could make others jealous of you...
