Who were the girls real dad and the boys real mom and what happened to them? Divorce or Death?

I just saw a scene from the original pilot that showed one of the kids pulling a picture of his Mom out of a drawer and his Dad saying it was ok to remember her. The show said it was the only reference to the dead mom. The boys were all his kids and the girls were all hers....Also in the pilot the girls had a cat. We never saw the cat again either..

due to standards of the time both were widowed, but for how long and what killed their first spouses was never discussed, for that matter I don't think any of the kids ever mentioned their late parent or expressed any emotion at their loss
I think the Movie "A Very Brady sequel" had Carol's ex-husband return and get them involved in the plot of the film

Carol's husband past away and I believe so did Mike first wife.
