Who-The Allied forces.
What-A large naval force consiting of every type of warship, hospital ships, transport ships, and landing craft. Thousands of infantry, hundreds of tanks.
When-June 6, 1944, early in the morning.
Where- The Normandy region on the coast of France.
Why. The Nazis were operating mainly out of France because it was a strategic position to bomb and eventually invade England.(They were never able to invade England). If the Allied forces were able to capture it, it would lessen the air raids on England and give the Allies a foothold in the European mainland. (Yes. I know I'm a history geek.) 8)

Weather caused a 24 hour delay.
On 5 June 1944, just before midnight Britsih double-daylight savings time, a French battalion of the British SAS were the first troops into Normandy, followed about a quarter hour after midnight 6 June by the Ox and Bucks, who captured a bridge on the Caen canal on the far left (east) flank of the invasion beaches. Not long after, British (6th) and American (82nd & 101st) paratroopers landed behind the beaches, as did a few dummy paratroops dropped by a small SAS section to simulate even more paratroops. Under the overall command of Ike and the landing command of Monty, the beach assaults went in at low tide to avoid obstacles. Rommel had expected the invasion at high tide to limit the distance across the beach. Rommel, at any rate, was in Germany for Lucy's birthday.
On the far east, Sword beach was assaulted by the British 3d division. The Canadians had Juno Beach, the British 50th Gold. The American 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions assaulted Omaha, and the 4th, on the far west, Utah. Dempsey led the British/Canadian 2nd Army and Bradley the US First.
Rommel thought his troops had to fight from fixed fortifications on the beaches, since many of his troops were drafted from the east (even a few Koreans, drafted by the Japanese, captured first by the Russians and then by the Germans, were there) and transport was limited by both shortages and Allied air supremacy. Von Runstedt, his superior, felt that putting them on the beaches opened them to naval gunfire. Hitler's solution to the argument was a compromise with the weaknesses of both and the strengths of neither idea.
I'd recomment Stephen Ambrose's book for a very readable and informative review of D-Day.
