An Open tournament is open to professionals who qualify. The US Open, for example and other Grand Slam tournaments automatically qualify the top 16 seeds for the tournament. Other ranked players are also allowed to participate but others must go through a qualifying tournament in order to be allowed to participate. These people can be both professional and amateurs.
