cause i have a vaio that has 384 memory but yet it goes faster than my e machine which has 512

It has to do with performance tuning and things like Hard Drive speed (RPM). Also the speed of the RAM, and type of processor are probably effecting the difference in performace youre seeing.

No - given the same environment, they need the same amount of memory. Perhaps the performance difference you're seeing is because of a slower processor or disk or something else?

Are they both using the sam eoperating system? That too could make a difference.

Basically though, there's nothing in a laptop that would make it require less memory than a similarly configured desktop computer.

You know the OS makes a huge difference also what software is downloaded into the machine. But to best answer the question is NO and YES because of the Chip set settings
