I think that by pointing fingers of blame and condemnation, the most important thing that is lost is any real discussions of the actual issues.

I can't even take the middle ground either. George W is taking a beating here, and I suggested we give the guy a break, guarantees thumbs down every time. We, the people, need to move away from using Presidential scape goats and start taking some of the responsibility for the role this country has in the world.

Instead of punishing our government for going overseas and trying to control other countries for their oil, for example, we should find ways to become more independent with the development of alternative energies. That may help unify us as a country, because I realize not everyone wants to go to war for us to thrive.

First off, let me say this: you rock. I wish there more folks out there like you.

Second, the answer is no, we haven't become a society of haters. We're becoming a society of steadily increasingly misinformed individuals that don't listen to each other.

I think a couple of things are happening. First, I think the surplus of media sources as well as an increasing trend of selecting and choosing our own media is allowing us to pick and choose information sources to suit our own biases. We're becoming less able to tolerate or even listen to other people's opinions. Second, folks in those parts of the media business focused on influencing people (marketers, political media consultants, PR types) have become increasingly sophisticated at using tactics that engage us emotionally rather than intellectually. Thirdly, our demographics are changing so that we engage with broad swaths of society less and less, and increasingly we see people more and more like ourselves.

All in all, a bunch of things are going on whose net effect is that we increasingly hear only things we like to hear and nothing else, which means we're free to entertain ourselves with caricatures we make up for ourselves about folks whose viewpoints we don't understand or like.

The supposed "war between Islam and the West" is a beautiful and terrifying example of this phenomenon. If you ask most people in the U.S. about who the Sunnis and who the Shi'a are, or even the difference between Arabs and Muslims, you'll get blank faces. I know this because I am only beginning to learn the difference myself. Many folks in the U.S. are attacking and defending groups that are completely incomprehensible to them, simply deciding what they are without any basis for their beliefs. All the while we attack each other for not seeing things the way we ourselves do. I really hope it stops because if we don't it could be the death of us.

For the demographic trends, check out _Bowling Alone_ by Robert Putnam. Excellent book. A tome, but worth the read.

No, we have not become a society of haters. I think that some of what you see on q&a's are from younger people who like to bait others! They really don't have any idea of what a decent, well asked question would be & their answers are, at times, pure nonsense! Some just answer to get that 2 points, their answers are at best glib & without thought.
Within my own circle of family & friends, I don't know of anyone who out-right hates anyone.

Yes, we have. Everyone is so caught up in who is right and who is wrong over silly little subjects that don't matter to anyone but those debating them. Why don't we all just cooperate, and make the world a better place? Either that, or continue on the road to self destruction.

Some people are so caught up in being right, that they have lost track of the principles that this country was founded on. In order to make America a better place, we must put aside our differences and work together.

I really hate you for asking this question. But yes, I think we have. If we don't agree with certain lifestyles, we tend to "Look down" on them. (Hate is too strong of a word for this catagory.) We can't stand to see a homeless person in our neighborhood. We will call the cops to have them removed before we offer to assist the person. When a lot of the times the person is just down on their luck. (Haven't we all had a bad part of our life at one time or another?)

It seems like it sometimes. I wonder if it is the competiveness instilled in us at an early age combined with the need to identify with a group.

Do you love the person that robs you? Do you hate the person that killed a family member? Please understand that evil is evil and good is good but right and wrong is our interpretation our actions is our responsibility so if I hate the person that did me wrong makes me evil then yes I do want that person to suffer I do wish bad things to happen to that person and deep down… so do you!

Because when someone doesn't have a valid point to make for their argument they turn to insults. It's what we see everyday in politics and religion, so it must be appropriate here as well.
