It means that the person compiling didn't actually write the information in the book. They just found it somewhere and made a book out of more than one thing they found.
A lot of times, poetry books are compiled, because the person who made the book didn't actually think up of all of the poems.

The authors (writeres) Eric and Mary entrusted Dr. Smith to put the information (they researched/wrote) together, made sure it was correct (made sense). He "compiled" (assembled) all the data and put it into a format that made it logical and readable.
