He was born in 1899 in either Birmingham or Montgomery Alabama, depending upon the source (most sources say Montgomery). Julian's father was a railroad postal worker, and HIS father was a slave. Julian's mother was a teacher. He grew up in Montgomery. Public education for blacks in Alabama at that time stopped at the eighth grade.
He entered DePauw University in Indiana as a "sub-freshman," having to take high-school level classes along with his freshman and sophmore load to make up for his earlier inadequate education. Despite that, he graduated first in his class, having taken Phi Beta Kappa honors.
