TV portrays them as less fortunate, the same that they portray attorneys as lying cheating lowlife. There are good and bad in every profession. I have owned my own janitorial business for over 20 years, have several employees, brand new vans and the latest state of the art equipment. Obviously I am not a mindless individual. Had one blue collar person where I was cleaning sneer at me and ask how was it having to clean toilets every day. I asked him how much he made in a year, when he answered I told him that I made double what he did and worked far less hours. He always treated me with respect after that. However, since janitors work when businesses are closed, we are often taken for granted and not appreciated. Very few times has anyone called to tell me how great something looks. Did get a thank you card this year from one customer, this means alot to our company. So to all the businesses out there, if you appreciate the work your janitorial company does, let them know

Being A Janitor

Head custodians can make good $$. My dad used to know a guy who was the head custodian of a high school who made $40,000 per year. I don't know what starting out janitors make but I'm sure the pay is pretty good because a lot of those jobs are 3rd shift. Since nobody wants to work the graveyard shift a typical janitor job may pay $12 per hour instead of minimum wage. You still have to consider the possibility that if you do that kind of work you won't have much of a life because you'll be asleep during the day and at work when everybody else is asleep. You must ask yourself is your social life worth sacrificing for the $$.

mainly yes, it depends on where the janitor works. Like me I've been a janitor at Arizona Mills Mall for half a year now. It sucks no matter how hard I push myself to make sure everything is clean its not good enough because there are too many filthy animals that dare call themselves human. No overtime, no healthcare, Minimum wage, and no real job security. After a few days you lose faith in humanity and when you let people use the bathroom after its suppose to be closed and clean they thank you by making a mess and smile on their way out.

No. It's not glamorous, but it definately isn't degrading. It's an honest job that has to be done. Many people have taken these positions because other place wouldn't give them a chance, no matter what their qualifications. Some people do janitorial work as a second job. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to feed your family. A degrading job (in my opinion) would be stripping or any number of illegal enterprises.

Well , Its Degrading because they dont have enough self-respect or they just have immense need for cash that they sell sex. mobsters, hitmen , drugdealers get good cash, but its not a respectable line of work. Plus people see prostitution as men taking advantage of women sometimes since the 'pimps' are genereally but not always men who take women who are vulnerable and are in need or nessicities. most prostitutes have no choice and do not want to do what they do but they're stuck in a hard place. Janitors and labourers arent the most glamour filled jobs but atleast they're benefiting to society and are able to tell people their occupation unlike any other the above mentioned. My general point is , having sex for money is degrading in it self because its supposed to be a loving, intimate thing and if you do sell sex just for the high income you need to check upon your priorities.

Absolutely not. I think it is a job that is very important because without a janitor the place would be a mess, not to mention it would smell very bad. If you are a janitor, don t be afraid to tell people what type of work you do. Keeping the surroundings clean is a hard work, a thankless job and many thanks to you for your hard dedicated work.

No it isn't. Not just anyone could become a janitor. I believe you have to have a certain qualification. That's only what the media presents to our society. They portray alot of negative things to us--like it's ok to cheat, kill, lie, it's a negative thing to have wrinkles and so on. Just think of it this way, somebody's gotta do the dirty work right?

I retired from janitorial work after 20 years and was making close to $15 dollars an hour when I retired. I always had "exceeds expectations" on my yearly evaluations and got good pay raises. There is nothing degrading or shameful about janitorial work. It is good, honest work.
