It has started to snow here in Chicago, and we are to get 1-2 inches. I am wondering if that is enough, if not, what is a good amount of snowfall to go sledding? 6-12 inches, more, less?

Just enough to cover the ground will be enough.

If you get too much snow anyways, your sled will get full of snow.

who in the world would wax or oil the bottom of their sled? sheesh. if you can't see the ground the snow should be good enough to go sledding. If the snow is firm it makes it better because a trail will be easier to go on. Just make sure that you make a good trail and if when you make a trail, that you Can see the ground, throw some snow from elsewhere on the trail to make it better.

Hope this helps and if I'm best answer, i would like to know how much Snow you got. I live in Jersey and we are supposed to get 4-6 inches. Sweet Snowboarding snow.

this depends on how sticky the snow is...if the snow is really sticky and can be packed down prolly only 1-2 inches..but if it is light and fluffy i would wait for much more so that you don't just sink and the sled will actually go somewhere!

if you wax or oil the bottom of your sled you could go sledding without any snow :)

It also depends on what is under the snow. If it is closely mown grass you don't need much at all. The bushier the base the more snow you need.
