Just doing a new home. The house is okay, but today i saw very strange greenish things on top of the main garage attic. (attic i mean as the roof)

My husband says it is asbestos, and that after we have sorted the house, the whole roof will be changed because if you touch, scratch or play, it is very dangerous. It looks old old black like strange material roof, which has thie green parts that are growing point point point each area of the roof.

Should I worry about this if i go inside and start living in the house but outside garage roof has this problem? I am a woman, and don't know much about this, and i'm worried because we cannot rush to do this roof yet. Husband is calm, but not me. Help!

Growing? I suspect it is moss, not asbestos. Asbestos in its natural state is white.

Even if it is asbestos (which I doubt) the only hazard is what is called "friable" (easily crumbled; dry) asbestos fibers, which are inhaled.

Asbestosis (the lung disease caused by long exposure to inhaled asbestos fibers) take a long time to develop. Just touching asbestos is not in the least bit harmful.

As a youngster, I helped my Dad install oil burners in converted coal fired boilers. The fire tube went into the old ash cleanout door, and a mixture of water and asbestos was used to fill the hole around the tube. Since I was small enough to get inside the firebox, I held the mixture from the inside while my Dad troweled it in from outside! We did a few dozen of these over the years.

I'm 65 now. No asbestos related diseases.

If it's growing on the roof and is green then its probably just moss, which grows on any type of roof in it's damp and in the shade. Don't worry about Asbestos as that is white and doesn't grow!!! Should have it checked when you can as the moss will eventually ruin the roof. Good luck don't worry about it being asbestos.
