The film was based on the book of the same name by Lucy Irvine, about a year she spent with writer Gerald Kingsland on the isolated island of Tuin, between New Guinea and Australia. In 1981, Irvine responded to a "Writer seeks 'wife' for year on tropical island" advertisement placed by Kingsland placed an ad in a magazine saying he was looking for a wife for 1 year and Lucy Irvine replied to the ad. They got married to satisfy Australian immigration laws before travelling to the Island, although he was 24 0r 25 years older than her.
