I would get one (or a small set) of a few different kinds. My baby gets pumped milk and formula. I got a couple of regular 9 oz straight bottles for mixing formula (easier than the curved ones), and you can use that to fill smaller bottles, especially in the beginning when babies only take a couple of ounces at a time. I have a couple of small "freezer grade" bottles for freezing breastmilk (although you may not bother with those), and a bunch of the curved vented ones (we started with a three pack of six ouncers, and THOSE are the ones she prefers, so we have a couple sets of nine ouncers now, as well). We have a variety of others that she just didn't really take to.

I don't bother with bottles with liners, as it takes all of about 20 seconds to wash out a bottle with a brush, and less if you have a dishwasher and just toss them in at the end of the day.

As for nipples, get slow flow at first. To be honest, my daughter liked the "orthodontic" nipples for the first two-three months, and then started spitting those out in favor of the "straight" nipples (although she likes orthodontic pacifiers...odd child). She REFUSES to use the fast flow nipples, but will take the medium flow or slow flow (she's now eight months old). Honestly, every baby is different. Sometimes I think her preferences change with the weather. :-) I just wouldn't go out and spend fifty bucks on a complete "set" only to discover that your baby HATES that brand, for whatever reason.

When it comes to bottles I have learned that you shouldn't stress over what type of bottle to buy. Considering the amount of bottles and nipples you are going to use I would get the plain Jane, cheap bottles that come in a 4 or 6 pack (like Gerber) and for nipples, baby learns to suck the type of nipple that is given to them from birth. I would get some newborn and some 0-3 month size nipples. Ya know the ones that just look like regular bottle nipples. If you try to go with some fancy kind it is going to be more expensive. Yes, on rare occasion a baby might require a certain type of nipple, but that will have to be discovered once the baby is born. All these bottles and nipples advertise formula flow controls, less gas problems.... I would just remember when feeding your wee-one make sure the bottles nipple is full of formula when baby is eating, in order to prevent extra air getting into the babies tummy, look at the bottle right where the nipple screws on, you should see a bunch of little bubbles as the baby eats which lets you know the baby is sucking the formula out of the bottle and always feed baby at an angle. What I mean by that is don't feed baby while baby is laying down on a flat surface, whether he/she is on back or side it will cause digestion problems and major ear infections! Hope this help, Take Care

I have 3 sons, so I've plenty of chances to try just about every bottle that's out there. I've tried the expensive kind that you get at the baby department stores, and the cheapest kind from Wal-Mart. By far, the best kind I've found is the Parent's Choice bottles at WM. They have an air flow system, so there are never any air bubbles. And the nipple's great...flexible with a bigger base than most others. I've never had a problem with leaking, which I had with the Playtex bag bottles. And the best part is that they're very affordable. Also, they come in 4 oz sizes (which actually hold more like 6 ounces) and 8 oz sizes (which could fit between 9 and 10).

(Just be careful not to put the adaptor on too far past the marking, or you'll have milk everywhere.)

Good luck!

I had gotten all sorts of bottles before my daughter was born. Dr Browns, Avent, and the bottles with disposable liners. My daughter didn't like the Dr Browns because of the nipple. They are made of some weird plastic, and they seem to be harder than other nipples. Plus, you can't use them for that long, because they are smaller than other bottles, so once she started wanting more milk, I would have to make two at once, or fill her bottle up again. The Avents were just horrible, she had a really hard time with those, because they let her swallow more air which made her gassy. The disposable ones were the easiest to use, and she liked the nipple the best that came with those. It is made of a softer plastic, and she had a really easy time transitioning from breastfeeding to bottle feeding with those. Plus, it prevents her from swallowing a bunch of air. We also tried those bottles that have the plastic screen type thing at the bottom of the bottle. It was on the same level as Avent. Not a very good design at all, and it didn't do what it said it would do.

Get what ever bottles you can afford and you yourself want. From there you can find the nipple your child will take. Alot of babies will have no problems taking the standard nipple, you'll more then likely find out in the hospital what your baby perfers. My son (9 months old)was a month early perfered the standard Dr'browns and Tri-flow {regular bottles} until he was 2 months old then perfered the bottles and nipples he is on now {playtex disposable system}. My daughter who is 13 could only use standard nipples her entire infantacy. Get a bottle with several nipple styles available if your so worried about it, playtex has the most styles available from my experiance

This is a toughy. Before giving birth, my sister kept telling me to buy a certain type of brand, since shes had great results with those bottles. Well, I bought a whole bunch, based on her recommendation, and it turns out, that my baby and those bottles weren't compatible. She dribbled, choked and spit up a lot. I've talked to a lot women that love this particular brand (Avent), but I was not happy with it. Now I have a whole bunch that will never get used. I guess you'll know until your baby gets here and she takes the bottle. See how she does. I found a bottle that works better than Avent for my baby, and I've kept using them (Playtex VentAire). She doesn't get much gas and she rarely chokes.

Oh, just make sure that you get a slow flow nipple. Are you also going to breastfeed?

Anyway, hope this little helps. Congrats and Good luck!

Dr. Brown's bottles are really nice. Avent bottles are nice, too, but I've seen the nipples leak often. The drop ins are very hygenic in some of the other types of bottles. I would recommend Dr. Brown's because they help with gas. If I were you, I'd buy a few different types and see which your baby likes and finds easiest to use.

If you are not planning to nurse ( and if you aren't, please rethink it! There will never be a sweeter time for you and your baby) then it's just what you think you might get out of a bottle. I didn't nurse my oldest, and could use any nipple and bottle I wanted. I always used nuk, because just the look of them made sense to me, and they graduated in size, and THAT made sense to me. My youngest I nursed for 8 weeks, and had a hard time switching her to ANY nipple, bottle or formula. We ended up with nuk again for nipples and pacies and had to stay on powdered soy for two years! So look at them all and see which one does what YOU might want for your baby ( less air, nuk nipple, easy to hold, etc) and go with a few of those. Don't buy too many of any one kind at first until you see which way the wind is blowing with your little one! Happy parenting!! :)

thats kind of a tough question. with my first we used avent. and he really liked those. with my second we tried to use those as well (so we wouldnt have to buy more) but she wouldnt take them. so we got her the playtex ones with the collapsible liner. between the 2 i like the playtex better because she doesnt have to be in a reclined position or tip her head way back if shes sitting to drink from it. its really a personal preference for you right now and then once the baby is born its up to them.

the only reason people say its a big deal to use certain types of nipples is if youre going to be breast feeding as well as bottle feeding. but even still most babies are smart enough to know the difference between the 2. good luck! and congrats!

At my baby shower, I was given Playtex, Dr. Brown's, and Avent bottles. My daughter is 2 months old, and I've been trying to get her used to the occasional bottle, and she prefers the Avent. She doesn't have any problems with them, and never seems to have gas problems afterward. She refuses to take the Dr. Brown's, and that's fine by me, because they are such a pain to clean since there are more pieces. The Playtex are alright, but she just doesn't seem to eat well from them. Good luck, and congrats on your baby!
