depends on the vehicle you have. some newer vehicles have a one piece hub and wheel bearing assembly and you can't replace just a wheel bearing. if you have doubts, have another mechanic look at it. otherwise get the part. the one on my 98 ford explorer awd cost $170... and took about an hour to take the old one off and out the new one on myself.

Buy the hub assembly if thats what you were told to buy. Is it that
hard to listen yes the wheel bearing itself will be cheaper but will take more labor to install.

Count your self lucky if this mechanic is letting you bring your own part, When was the last time a restaurant cooked a steak that you supplied.
