Never tried any kits.
What I've noticed most of them have is basically a cd to listen to while you sleep that is suppose to give prompts of sorts to alert you that you could be dreaming. A journal to keep help you with your dream recall. A book you write in or software you install on your pc. You can pick up a notebook anywhere and there's plenty of websites that you can keep a journal. Helpful tips that I believe most everyone involved in lucid dreaming already know like reality checks. I'll provide links. Techniques that people have tried. Waking up at certain times or repeating to yourself that you're going to have a lucid dream as your going to sleep etc... Again, google search.

I'd suggest doing the basics for a 2 or 3 months before bothering with the kit:

1. Do a dream journal. Record or write them down; whatever works best for you.

2. Do at least 2 reality checks no matter how sure you are that it's real life. I say more than one because the first time could fail. Common ones are: holding your nose and try to breathe through it (just looks like you're about to sneeze), looking at your hands (never tried it myself but many swear by it), turning a light on or off, and looking at a digital clock more than once to see if it changes. One common RC that I don't recommend is the reading of text. I don't have much problem reading in my dreams, and I've read that it usually matters on the size of the text.

3. Keep an open mind. Try different ways that you come across or mix them up. If it seems weird, don't tell anyone- hey if it works.

4. Relax. Lucid dreaming is one of those things that seem to elude those that chase too hard.

These are what work best for me. The techniques that I use are WBTB combined with MILD. I prefer WILD because you experience sleep paralysis, hypnagogic imagery and sounds (the things you see when your eyes are closed and the noise that seem real but aren't), and you're able to see your dream as it forms. Honestly, WILD is the hardest for me but it's my favorite.
