The above answer is wrong, the constitution did not exist in 1776 -- that was the Declaration of independence.

The US Constitution was written by the constitutional convention in 1787. It still needed to be ratified (approved) by at least 9 of the original states, and that occurred a year later in 1788. the resulting government as set up by the constitution took office in 1789.
