I used to live in Tacoma and never knew of it being called "The City Of Destiny". I do, however, know of the "Aroma of Tacoma". It has a really bad smell around the Tacoma Dome. I've heard it's from an old flour mill.

That's an intresting question....I grew up in Tacoma and live just 45 minutes away from there now, and I don't know why it's 'The City of Destiny'.

I do know that Tacoma is the only major city west of the Mississippi that has never been destroyed by fire or a natural disaster.

ETA: The 'Aroma of Tacoma' is not from an old flour mill. The smell occurs in the summer when the tide is out and the sun heats the sand in the Commencment Bay tide flats. Downtown Tacoma has a long industral history. Much of what contributes to the smell is chemicals used in paper and lumber milling from long ago. Over several years the chemicals seeped into the soil (or were actually dumped into the sound) and now continue to leach out.

It is? Since when? Is this something the city paid a quarter million dollars for, like Seattle did for "Metronatural?"
