My red tips are 2 years old and are looking tall and thin. How do I get them to grow tall and bushy and when is best and how do I fertilize them without killing them? Thanks for the information.....

Photinia respond to some pruning to shape them and encourage new growth from lower down insde the plant.Water them deeply and fertilize them in the spring. If you water them a few times through the growing season and mulch them with something that will retain some of the moisture It will help. I have noticed that they get blackspot, and fungussy looking, so possible recommendation of lime sulpher or even neem oil would help their general overall appearance.

Give them a prune you will have to sacrifice some height initially and gain height again as they grow. Most shrubs should be tip pruned initially to give them bushiness to the ground. Regular light pruning will give you the denseness you want. (Perhaps 2 to 3 times a year).

Photinia need a good general purpose fertilizer (just follow the directions as to how much and when on the packet), and would benefit from a well rotted organic material as a mulch. They also like regular watering.
