As Jurgen.H says, both the Russians and Americans have sent unmanned lunar probes to the Moon.

The Americans also sent 9 lunar missions:

Apollo 8 - Frank Borman, Jim Lovell & Bill Anders - first lunar orbit

Apollo 10 - Tom Stafford, John Young & Gene Cernan - 'dress rehearsal' for Apollo 11

Apollo 11 - Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins & Buzz Aldrin - first manned lunar landing

Apollo 12 - Pete Conrad, Dick Gordon & Al Bean - second manned lunar landing, first pinpoint landing (300 yds from Surveyor probe)

Apollo 13 - Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert & Fred Haise - catastrophic explosion in oxygen tank nearly caused first 'in space' fatalities, however they made it back to Earth by doing a slingshot around the Moon

Apollo 14 - Al Shepard, Stuart Roosa & Edgar Mitchell

Apollo 15 - Dave Scott, Al Worden & Jim Irwin

Apollo 16 - John Young, Ken Mattingley & Charlie Duke

Apollo 17 - Gene Cernan, Ron Evans & Jack Schmitt

Of the above, 12 have walked (well, bunny hopped) on the Moon's surface:

Armstrong & Aldrin
Conrad & Bean
Shepard & Mitchell
Scott & Irwin
Young & Duke
Cernan & Schmitt

They really did go to the Moon - don't believe anybody who says it was faked. For one thing, the Russians were keeping an extremely close eye on American activities and if there was the slightest evidence of faking, they would have pounced on it and broadcast it to the world!

If by "who" and "for real" you meant what being landed on the moon first then I would have to say an extraterrestrial because it is more probable for them to have visited the moon before us.

If by "who" and "for real" you meant did we (humans) really land on the moon then I would say yes because although it is very real for NASA to lie and pretend to have actually landed on the moon just to raise funding and hopes for space travel, I believe that space travel is but a billion dollars away. In other words we have the brains we just need the tools (a billion or so dollars). I do not doubt that someone has indeed gone into space...infact I believe that in a few years space travel will be used as a means of transportation and the cost will decrease to test it out.

If douglas B is correct, I wonder why NASA has suffered budget cuts every year since Nixon took charge [before they even landed on the moon]

The former Soviet Union were first to the moon.First with a crash landed probe. A later probe took photos from the surface. They landed robotic explorers too and returned soil samples. The Soviets did all of this first EXCEPT the soil sample return.

The USA were first [only] to land a human and they brought back the first soil samples.

The USA sucessfully landed 6 manned craft on the moon allowing 12 humans to have walked on the moon. Armstrong was the first, Cernan was the last.

Cernan was on the Apollo 17 Crew who arrived back on earth just before the New Year which brought in 1973. Nobody has been back since.

How I know they went there would take too long to explain, here. But if someone tries to say they faked it, send them round to me and I'll give them a slap.

No we didn't land on the Moon. We didn't invent the aircraft, we didn't cure polio, we didn't cross oceans and found new land, and certainly we didn't discover fire. Of all things we accomplished and can prove, even if we didn't land on the Moon, I believe it's possible. I believe in things, because I know how they are done. The race to Moon had two participants. If we didn't land on the Moon, I'm sure Soviets would have proved it to rest of the world.

US Astronauts went to the Moon, landed, explored,
blasted off from the Moon, and returned to the Earth.
Some people just get their jollies by casting doubts
about it. I find it interesting that these people who
cast all the doubtful remarks are not pilots or navigators.
They are just people on the street with personal opinions.
God bless them, each and all.

Russian probe Luna2 is the first man made object to reach the moon, on September 14 1959. It was a deliberate crash.

If I am not mistaken, US probe Surveyor 1 was the first to land on the moon (as opposed to crash) on May 30 1966.

In December 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 went to the moon, but just overflew it before returning. So they went there, technically, as your question is not specific about getting or landing there.
Apollo crew was Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders.

First human soft landind was done by the 'Eagle' LEM of mission Apollo 11 on July 20 1969. Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin (as his legal name was back then, he had it officially changed to Buzz later, as he told us when he came for a conference 10 years ago -- if you EVER happen to heard of Dr Aldrin coming to your town for a conference, DO NOT MISS IT) were on board, and Neil Armstrong, after jumping up a couple of times from the landing pad to get a feeling of the lower gravity, put one heavy booted foot on it, in front of millions of live viewers worls wide. I was 12 at that time, and I will never forget that moment. It was TRULY out of this world, as we were witnessing history in the making.
