I always wondered whether they do it to hide behind something or disguise a double chin? What is their real reason?

Men grow beards for many reasons, not just the same reason.
I grew my beard when I was about 21 to hide my teenage acne scars. The beard filled in well, but it was incredibly hot in the summer. After I shaved it off, I never grew it back again.
Some young men, like my son, grow it out to show the other college kids how "mature" they are. Some young women find this to be rugged and manly, but not every man can pull it off.
One friend grew a beard because he was just too lazy to shave everyday. One guy grew a beard because he was a rebel and would do anything to piss off the establishment or "civilized" society. Can you believe that people still think this way?
So, there are several reasons for a beard. Not to mention, escaped convicts, religious reasons, homelessness,etc.

All guys grow beards for different reasons. If they have a double chin, though, you would still be able to see it unless the beard was REALLY long. I would say the main reason is because they get lazy and don't want to have to shave! Haha - we all know how men can be... ;)

sometimes, it enhanced their features or change the visible shape of their faces. For example, a man with a round face may look better with beards cos it makes the face seems longer and enhanced the chin making it look as if they have a manlier jaw.
For some they do it cos they wanna hide scars or other stuffs around their chin. And for the younger generations, they mainly wanna look older and more adult, so they could get stuff like beers and ciggarettes and chicks easily.

I'm too lazy to shave. but i have only a goatee, so I only need to shave my cheeks once every few days. Once every week, but many times longer than that, I use my electric beard shaver. The chin on 4 and the mustache on 2. Nice and quick. I can't even imagine shaving every day.

It's not so much that we like beards, it's that we despise shaving.
It might help you understand if you consider the fact that the face is much more curvy then the leg and a mans chin has more hairs on it then both legs put together.

Because shaving takes too much effort, and no one really seems to care if you let the stubble grow wild for a few days. Its the same reason why some women don't shave their legs if they aren't expecting company for a while.

I had a beard since high school because I got tired of shaving. My beard is so thick that I would need to shave twice a day. It got old. 30 years later I shaved it off and will never have a beard again. I look younger and am keeping it off - I do not want to even remotley look like a muslim.

I'm sure it varies depending on the guy. Some just like the way it looks. I wear a Van Dyke. Ever since I was a little kid I wanted one and as soon as I could I grew one and have had it ever since. I like the way it looks. I like have hair on my face to paly with. And, I hate the way it feels when it's not there. I might just be used to having it though.
