What we call visible light is simply the result of photons falling on our retinas. The photons excite neural messages to our brains, which interpret them as visible light.

When we look out into (comparatively) empty space and not at some source of light, like the sun for example, there is nothing there to reflect the photons back towards us. In which case, there are no or very few photons entering our eyes from space; thus space seems black even though it is full of photons. Put something out there, like a satellite, that satellite will shine brilliantly because some of the photons hitting it are reflected into our eyes.

Space is filled with debris, planets, moons, suns, and emptiness. By space you must be refering to the emptiness. It is dark because there is nothing there for light to reflect off of. Our atmosphere is full of gases which reflect light making the sky look blue but in space, there is no gas for this to happen. There is light in space! How else do we get the light to earth from the sun...it travels through space.

Hmmm...i think it has much to do with reflection. The sun's light is reflected by the moon and by the planets but space is empty, void of any thing to reflect the light from the sun. It's like a physical representation of a tree falling in the forest and the sound it makes. If there's nothing there to hear it or in this case reflect it, it's not seen.

scientifically, its only because there is little or no light

because that space is to far from any stars.

because there is no light out there, light doesn't travel through space.
