Okay, you've got a lot of erroneous information in your question.
First - NO country just 'stays in it's own country' - For example, France recently invaded the Ivory Coast and still has troops there. North Korea invaded South Korea, Vietnam invaded Cambodia, and so on and so on - Even if you discount military units, the US presence due to business, culture, and science is HUGE - if you want to factor in the immense amounts of money we simply GIVE countries (Foreign Aid), it's even bigger.
So if you want us to just 'stay in our own country', you're dooming most of the world to death. About fifteen minutes after we tell everyone we're just staying home and pull out, there will be war in Taiwan, Korea, throughout the Middle East, Bosnia, Serbia, Turkey, the Kashmir, and Africa. Starvation and disease will run rampant, the economies of every nation in the world will collapse leading to war throughout the rest of the planet that didn't go up in the first fifteen minutes.
al Queda is an anti-Western organization. We're just the biggest powerhouse defending the West. You'll note al Queda attacks in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Italy, Germany, Russia, Georgia, the Phillipines, Australia, and more. Iran is one of the major funders and training sources for al Queda, Hezbollah, and a dozen other Islamic terror organizations. Again - Anti-Western, not just anti-US.
North Korea hates pretty much everyone. It's called The Hermit Kingdom for a reason, you know - They even conflict with China, their sole patron in the world. If you want to see REAL hate, check out how the Koreans and the Japanese feel about each other.
Other superpowers don't hate us at all. The Brits and Aussies are our strongest allies, we work pretty closely with Russia, the Germans are almost always working with us, the French go their own way all the time, but we constantly bail them out in many areas (e.g. Vietnam), and the Chinese are one of our strongest trading partners. The US is powering the Chinese economic explosion right now.
What you are SEEING is a very liberal bias in the media. Liberals have a very strong self-hate component about their beliefs. Part of this is based in their belief in their own superiority and needing to explain why everyone else doesn't see it. You see this in a lot of their writings where they refer to themselves as intellectuals, the inteligentsia, etc. and talk about how if only the world would listen to THEM things would be fine. So if people DON'T listen to them, they must simply be bigoted, uneducated redneck rubes. Since most of the country doesn't listen to them, there must be something wrong with their country...And so on.
If people across the world so hate this country, ask yourself why so many of them line up to get in here and so many risk their lives to escape the socialist hell-holes they currently live in? IF they so loathe everything American, why do they buy our books, movies, music, and television programs? Why is American culture so predominant that nations like France pass laws trying to protect their own culture? If you hate something, you rarely try to become just like it.
So, to sum up, your proposal would surely fix OUR problems - the US would be quite happy. The rest of the world would go down the toilet in short order though...Probably not the optimal solution you're seeking with your isolationist proposal.

EDIT: As usual, people claiming that we don't take care of our troops do not have the faintest clue what they are talking about, same for those who think that taking 12 years before resorting to mlitary intervention is somehow a 'rush to war'. Educate yourselves before typing, folks. Parroting talking points just makes you look like a parrot.
2nd EDIT: It's OK for us, Germany, France, Russia, China, and the UK to have nukes because we've shown we're a functioning responsible nation and aren't going to just use them or sell the technology to terrorists. It's not OK for nations like North Korea or Iran to have nukes because they've already said they'll use them ASAP and because they - like Pakistan - plan to give the technology to terrorist groups. Why is it OK for police and responsible citizens to have guns, but not OK for convicted felons and the mentally ill to have guns? DUH.

i agree more then you. to say we wouldn't have problems with foreign relations particulary terrorism if we mined our own buisness is an understatement. all north korea wants is to be north korea. they are extreme isolationists. plain and simple, and wheb you threaten a country like that and call them evil, well of course they are going to try and atm them self's. i've i kept talking crap about you and kept saying i should destroy you and that you are evil wouldn't you feel like buying a gun or something. and as far as the middle east goes if people did actually listen to the terrorists grievences instaed of bush's interpretations of them the whole thing would make sense, becuase no they don't hate us for our freedom. there not idiots. they are poor and they are religous. they hate us for destroying there country and crating corupt leaders for over a century. Iran is one of the only countrys to break free of american control and that is why we hate them. people need to stop listening to liars and start using common sense.

I agree. Not wholesale isolationism, but the money spent on other people could very well be invested in amazing things such as healthcare, education, and what have you to improve the lives of all Americans instead of spending it on others.
