They are the only part that has a country that consists of united states that have formed a federation of states yet still have individual state governments AND there are 50 of them. No other country in the Americas fits that description.

in the states they teach you that south America is a continent and then north America is another continent... in south America they teach you that America is a whole continent (including Canada, the states and Mexico) divided in 3 North, central and South... American people took for granted ages ago that their nationality is "American" , that's why is so confusing for people from south America and other countries... Is a Canadian or Mexican an American?? in a way Yes, but his passport will never say "American"... so it is right for an American to be called "American" and it is right for an Argentinian to be called "American".... however I don't think not the American nor the Argentinian would agree... this is an endless matter.

Anyone that is a resident of either North America, Central America, or South America is rightfully called an American including Canadians, Mexicans etc.

As far as I can see, ignorant politicians have developed the bad habit of calling the United States "Amuurica" and its citizens "Amuuricans" ....a pet peeve of mine.

Regional conventions differ. Mexicans refer to "norteamericanos" to mean people from the US and Canada, grouping themselves (sensibly) in with the rest of Latin America. People in the US, by contrast, use "North America" to refer to the US, Canada and Mexico, e.g. in the "North American Free Trade Agreement". In the US "America" is a convenient shorthand for the more cumbersome "United States of America", and also allows conjugations that "United States" does not - e.g., the use of the word "American" to refer to people from the US. There's some contention about that last usage, with more sensitive types avoiding it and speaking only of "U.S. citizens", etc.

I believe anyone from Canada to Tierra del Fuego has the right to call themselves as Americans. Simple as that.
Remember that the correct name of Mexico is "Estados Unidos Mejicanos".

South America is a continent.
Argentinians are South Americans, but they are not Americans.
