More expensive usually have more prestige, and more to offer to students, like better teacher to student ratio, etc.

Cheap schools? Where? I want to go. Or are you talking state schools and private schools? Mainly, the name on your diploma is a matter of prestige. It looks better on your resume to have graduated from Princeton than from the City University of New York. There are some real benefits, as well. Private universities tend to be more selective in hiring professors and in admitting new students. The result is that you get a somewhat fuller education in such a setting. In all reality, the difference at the bachelor's level is minimal. The Princeton alum is likely to be hired first or admitted to graduate school first, but the CUNY alum will do fine in life if s/he buckles down to study and gets some decent grades.

Totally depends. An inexpensive school that is really strong in your chosen area and thus prepares you well is better than a big-name school that doesn't have a good program in your subject.

Sometimes expensive schools have a reputation that sounds great, but the reality is their top professors are mostly research oriented and aren't about to be bothered with teaching mere freshman, so they put grad students in charge of those first and second year courses.

Sometimes the less expensive schools have professors who are more focused on teaching than on research, and they are accessible to the students and committed to being great teachers.

Cost is no indicator of quality, especially when you start looking at your specific area of study.

What about the professionalism of the students who attend there! I went to what you refer to as a "cheap school" and man oh man....unbelievable. I'm talking about students walking into class 45 minutes after it started and having music blaring out of their headphones. Very disrespectful for the prof and other students. Also students who constantly are text messaging, or don't find it at all disrespectful to keep forgetting to put their cells on vibrate. Oh and what about the constant eating in class. Theres always the annoying student who leaves midway and comes back with smelly disgusting food and has to chomp on it and make noise during an important lecture. Ahhhhhhh I would have taken out a huge loan and gone to a "expensive school" if I had realized how annoying and unprofessional my collegues were going to be!

I think that the difference is that at more expensive schools, you get a better education, with better teachers and an overall better experience. This may not always be true, but most of the time it is.

Most expensive schools (MOST not ALL) have a smaller student to teacher ratio - which means smaller class sizes. That way the teacher can give more attention to individual students and, often, try and meet their individual needs.

I think there's a lot of difference, but one of the more obvious ones is the quality of education.Top universities often hire instructors who have PhD in their fields, and have published tons of work. At non-top universities, sometimes the instructors don't have a PhD, and may have only published a few things.
