If any store will sell two kittens for less the $90, turn around and run out. Even in a good deal, the vet care the kitten should have BEFORE sale should be $30-$50, then there is overhead (food, care) and finally a profit. The MINIMUN price you should buy a cat at is $60, below that, it has not had proper vet care. Make sure that all the shots up to the age are done, also deworming, flea and tick prevention, ask about a rhino vaccine done, if not, why not. Rhino spreads like wild fire among cats and a good store will prevent an outbreak on the premises. Also, ask the age at which the kittens were brought in, when they were brought in, if they have not been there for 14 days, there could be latent viruses. Ask if the parents were outdoor or indoor cats. Know what type of food they are use to eating, make sure its a good quality kitten food. Make sure they eat dry food.
Finally, make sure they are socialized and played with often, if not, you'll like end up with a cat that doesn't like to be cuddled and picked up to much.
oh yes, and the vast majority of domestic kittens in pet stores come from the exact same sources as they do in shelters, so there is no moral issue of "rescue those first" - well, with the exception that most pet stores that sell animals have a non-kill policy now a days.

Petsmart DOES NOT sell cats or dogs. They provide space in their store for local animal shelters to bring in cats and dogs (on selected days) that are available for adoption. They have saved over 1 million lives. (almost 2, I believe). The great pet stores do not sell dogs or cats. Some don't even sell rabbits or ferrets because there are too many wonderful animals that need to be adopted. Petland, which is a fairly popular pet store gets their animals from puppy mills. They are not breed to the correct standards and the places where the come from are in horrible shape. The moms are kept in cages way to small and they aren't even clean. HBO had a documentary with an undercover guy from an animal shelter get a job at one of these and he recorded all that went on there and presented to the proper authorities. The place got shut down but there are still many out there. I respect pet stores that choose not to sell cats or dogs. Although puppies are cute to look at in pet stores, when I see them I have a hard time not picturing their mommy some where in a cage, un-healthy, and without human contact or companionship.

Very few pet stores sell cats/dogs anymore, with the exception of a couple like PetsMart which adopts out cats and kittens from local shelters and rescue groups. I was just there yesterday and the price for kittens (fixed with shots) is like $65 a piece. I suggest going around to some local shelters in New Jersey and looking. You can probably find a cheaper price, but just keep in mind most places have already paid for things like spaying/neutering and most of the shots. The only problem with animal shelters I can foresee is that you'll want to take them ALL home. :)

PetsMart I believe, it's a store that starts with Pets, so it's either Petsmart or PetCo... call and ask, they sell rescues and shouldn't be that expensive. You may have to shop around though, I'm not sure how they do it. You should also search online (Yahoo Groups has at least one site) for cat rescue sites, some even arrange transportation if they're across the country, and I think it's low cost. Good Luck!

Instead of going to a pet shop, go to your animal shelter! they should get them fixed for you and I'm not sure about the shelters up there but down here in Houston you can adopt a kitten for $60. A small price to pay considering it's also gotten it's shots and is already spayed/neutered!

You can get FREE kittens at a barn, and trust me, they're a billion times better than the 100$ cats you get at the store.
We've been raising farm cats and giving them away for about 15 years. They only need shots and a vet check, but so does every other animal.
Consider going to a shelter, too. They always have kittens they have to get rid of.

Please do not buy a kitten at a pet shop or otherwise, call your local humane society or animal rescue. There are far too many loving babies put to death daily. You can access internet sites in your area as well for puppies, kittens, even horses and goats....... not only will you be providing loving homes for 2 kittens but keeping them from being killed before they have a chance to feel how great it is to be your pet.

Go to a shelter or rescue group. They have adoption fees, but those are mainly to cover vet costs.
Alternatively, you could check the newspaper for "free to good home" ads, put the kittens in those are usually unvetted, and you'll have to pay all shots, deworming, and the spay/neuter yourself. Therefore kittens from a shelter are usually the better "deal" by far.
