IT MAY BE DOING JUST WHAT IT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO WHEN THE TEMP GETS COLD. IF IT IS A HEAT PUMP AND HAS GAS BACKUP HEAT IT PROBABLY IS PROGRAMED TO USE THE GAS FURNACE WHEN THE HEAT PUMP IS NOT VERY EFFICIENT. SO IT IT HAPPENS ONLY WHEN THE TEMP IS VERY COLD IT IS OK. JUST TO BE CERTAIN-CALL THE INSTALLING SERVICE COMPANY WHO DESIGNED THE INSTALLATION. ONLY THEY WILL KNOW FOR CERTAIN.

Sounds like a thermostat problem. It could be it's location, being effected by hot or cold air blowing on it, the setting between the two could be too close, or, it could be defective. In any case, it has to be in the control section of the wiring.

If, when the unit is running, you can feel an air flow across the thermostat, tape a piece of cardboard over the front of it to deflect the airflow and see if that solves the problem. If it does, relocate the thermostat.

No it is not right, and it will damage the compressor. In heat mode, that compressor has a compression ratio of nearly 13 to one. (In regular AC it is about 7 to one) And applying heat from the gas burners to the evaporator coil will drive up that compression ratio to very high numbers and eventually damage the compressor and void any warranties.

I would say that you probably have a short in the wires from the Thermostat that is causing that or a damaged or sticking switchover in the thermostat.

I recommend that you turn off of the electrical power to the a/c and to the furnace. turn it off at the breakers and the thermostat. let it sit for about 5 minutes. then turn on the breaker aand let it sit like that for about 5 muinutes. then turn on the thermostat. sincew we are in the heat season, go to the heat mode. wait 5 more minutes. then turn up the temp so as to engage the heat. I hope this will work for you. Sometimes the electronics need to be rest and this is one way to do that.

Has the thermostat been replaced? If so it might be the wrong type, they all look alike but are not. If it hasn't then I'd start there, Its not very costly. Next it could be shorted wires.
Good luck, UJ
