India. Brought about the total collapse of the British Empire in India through peaceful revolution. He was humble, dressed humbly, suffered persecution for a time at the hands of the murderous Brits, but won over his own nation (India) which rallied behind him and kicked out the English.

I believe that Gandhi was born in South Africa, and it's also where he got trained as a lawyer. This man earned the title 'Mahatma', meaning 'Great Soul', because of his remarkable efforts to free India from Great Britain.
India was a colony of G.B. at the time. (Pakistan was part of India at this time.) Many people wanted Indian independence, and some wanted to resort to armed rebellion. Gandhi was a complete pacifist who believed that enough moral pressure could be brought to bear on the British that they would eventually give up. He was right, but the campaign of non-violent demonstrations took over 40 years to work. The film about him is very good, although it makes it seem like he did it single handedly.
