Well the gaswket itself is like ten bucks, but don't forget the cost of getting the head surfaced and the block planed in case it's more serious than just the gasket. Are you sure the block isn't cracked?

Chances are they arent fixing the car and sell it for more because they have taken it to a shop. Call a shop and ask them approximately how much the head gasket job would cost. Then remember that there could be other damage from running the engine with the blown gasket. Also rember that the antifreese must be drained from the block (not just a radiator)before removing the heads as any amount of antifreeze in the oil becomes corrosive and that can damage main bearings in the engine. Just one oil change will not remove all antifreeze from the oil. If there is antifreeze in the oil, ask how long it has been like that, and if it has been sitting for a while....pass on the car.

I would pass on it unless you can do the work - which sounds like you can by your questions - the cyclinders may be full of water & therefore rusty- the head may be warped or cracked - there is still the issue are to why it is blown - was it overheated ? if so why ? Plugged radiator ? bad water pump ? bad theomostat ? Bad belt ? Freeze plug pop out in a cold snap ? Is this an overhead cam motor - if so - it will likly need a new timing belt etc. et.. This is 2007 - this car is 11 years old. Its an easy enough job - an independant wil chage you at least $600 - but if the head is cracked - it will be $1,000+ - unless you can find a used one on ebay for cheap ..then there is the reason why is blew in the fits place - new radiator - $300+

It would depend on which engine is in the car. Personally I would recommend to not buy an 11 year old car that needs a head gasket unless you can get this car for about $300. Who knows what other problems you have.

i'm not a mechanic, but it just happens that my friend had a gasket blown on his nissan, the quotes he got for replacing the head gasket was between $1000-$1600 canadian dollahs.
also, if you replace the gasket who can say for sure that it won't blow again? I mean what was the reason for it to blow in the first place. as well, if the gasket is blown the chances are that the engine was overheated. who knows what condition the head is in.

i own a shop, and the head gasket set cost around 40 bucks or more, but the labor is going to be really high on it,and since it has a blown head gasket ,can you be sure that's all that's wrong with it,usually when these blow it does more than just blow a gasket you also have to have the head re-surfaced on it,its going to cost you more than that car is worth to repair it,unless they are giving it to you,id think this one over real good, you may be throwing away a lot of good money on this one, good luck,i hope this help,s.

Better call a shop, if you do it yourself it should be cheap. If you want to have someone do it its gonna cost you. Its time consuming but doing it yourself is much cheaper.
