I'm going to be honest with you. In music, you get what you pay for. First thing, check out the pawn shops. I've bought a $1,500 bass for $90. So, after you've checked the pawn shops, check online at www.musiciansfriend.com . They've got some pretty decent starter guitars at good prices. You could also try the Fender Squire Stratocasters and Telecasters. Eventually, when you become a lot better, and want a better quality guitar, then my advice is for you to go to Carvin (www.carvin.com). They'll build what you want, and you eliminate the middle man by going to the manufacturer itself. My son bought a guitar from them 2 years ago, for a little over $1,000 and still is extremely happy with his guitar. Best of luck to you.

My mom got me a Lyon by Washburn for Christmas last year. she won't tell me where she bought it, but apparently it was under $200. it is a good starter guitar and comes in a set with a case, spare strings, tuner, practice amp, instructions, cords and wammy bar.
