You don't plant the whole cone, only the seeds from the cone.

if your tryin to get a pine tree from a cone you have to put the cone in the oven and heat it so the seeds pop out of the cone then put them inbtwen two wet paper towles put that on a plate and put it in a window wear it will get a lot of light and in a few week poof a lil pine tree (you have to keep the paper towles wet ) its a heck of a lot ezer to buy one

i am thinking about your prior question, are you planting a pine cone?
not sure if this will work, never tried it, but i would think the pointed end should face the top of the hole.......
the wider end towards the bottom...
